Hilton Head Island on Two Wheels
The Lowcountry is all about fun and relaxation. Here, you can roam as you please, choose your adventures on the fly, and find yourself in moments of pure bliss. The best way to truly immerse yourself in that oh-so-nice vacation feeling is to live like the locals and wholeheartedly experience a different pace of life. This is where the tried and true bicycle comes into play! On America’s Favorite Island®, we have 60 miles of multi-use trails connecting you to everywhere you need to go — as well as places you didn’t even know existed! Solo, in a group, with children, or with those who have mobility limitations, Hilton Head Island caters to everyone's biking needs and preferences to ensure a seamless and carefree getaway.
Wheels in Motion
With nearly 30 bicycle rental shops offering approximately 15,000 bicycles for rent, it’s easy to pick up the perfect bike when you get here. Along with your standard bikes, you can rent an Alley Cat (an adult bike with an extension for children), a romantic tandem bike, a Kiddie Kart, electric bikes, and more. You’ll find exactly what you need when you book with one of our trusted partners. Many rental places will deliver right to your hotel or villa. Just call a few days ahead of time to secure your ride. Before you head out, ensure you have your helmet, which you can rent, water bottle, reflective and bright clothes, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a lock! If you are renting an e-bike, be sure to familiarize yourself with the e-bike pathways map that shows you where you can cruise!
Remember, think about safety first. Being well-prepared ahead of a big day on the trail allows you to enjoy your adventure to the fullest.
Hit The Trails
While we proudly hold the title of America’s Favorite Island®, we have other impressive accolades that warm our hearts, like the fact that we are a Gold Level Bicycle Friendly Community by the American League of Bicyclists. Here, you can bike through our slice of paradise, including the beach! With 12 miles of packed, hard sand, you’ll never cycle out of places to explore. If you plan to spend most of your day in the bike seat, it’s good to remember that there are plenty of restaurants along the bike paths — perfect to keep you fueled and full. From trail to patio, you always have a good day when you spend most of it on your bike.
Sights to See
One of our favorite parts about choosing a bike to explore our slice of paradise is that you get to immerse yourself in the landscape, feeling the wind on your rosy cheeks and having the sounds of local wildlife fill your ears. If you look up as you pedal down our leisure paths, you just may spot osprey, bald eagles, sandpipers, pelicans, egrets, and more feathered friends. On the ground, you might spy raccoons, gray foxes, and our very own Hilton Head whitetail deer. Of course, your whole day will be framed with the tendrils of Spanish moss, a native species here on Hilton Head Island.
Our Best Kept Secrets
Our dedicated local biking community loves to frequent our paths and trails and welcome visitors to explore them, too. With so many trails to choose from, some feel like hidden gems only known by select few. Luckily, we’re happy to share a few of our favorite lesser-known paths with you. With fewer visitors, pristine beauty, and peaceful parks, you’re sure to love them. Check out these paths on your next ride: Fish Haul Creek Park, found on Beach City Road; Barker Field Observation Deck, found on Mitchelville Road; The Vetern’s Memorial at Shelter Cove Community Park, located on Shelter Cove Lane; Crossing Park on Helmsman Way; and Jarvis Creek Park, found on William Hilton Parkway.
Make Biking High on Your Lowcountry Bucketlist
From long, meandering paths to sun-soaked stretches of beach to secluded trails draped in Spanish moss, untethering yourself from expectation and leaning into the freedom of Hilton Head Island is as easy as getting off your feet and on two wheels. Most of our Island is accessible via bicycle, so be sure to check our Event Calendar for festivals, concerts, and exhibitions taking place during your stay here. Attending these events is a fantastic way to enjoy our vibrant culture while spending quality time on our beautiful Island!
