Golf Options for the Entire Family This Summer
Golf participation surged in 2020 with thousands of new and lapsed golfers taking up the game. And 2021 is off to a fast start, with a record number of juniors taking up the game.
If you’re planning a family trip to Hilton Head Island this summer, resorts and courses around “Golf Island” are offering several camps, clinics and promotions for young golfers.
Here’s a roundup as of this writing and check back for additional updates later this spring as more programming is announced.
FUNDAMENTALS CAMP AT THE SEA PINES RESORT
Home to the PGA TOUR’s RBC Heritage, The Sea Pines Resort has a long history of growing the game through junior golf. This summer, the resort is offering eight sessions of its Fundamentals Camp during July and August, held at its state-of-the-art Golf Learning Center.
Designed for beginner and intermediate junior golfers ages 6-12, the popular camp covers the “FUN-damentals” of the game. Long and short game technique, rules, etiquette and athletic skills will be developed each day. Drinks and snacks are provided daily.
The camp takes place from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. daily, and sessions are limited to six young golfers. Visit The Sea Pines Resort website for more info on dates and pricing. To register contact Marcus Hunt at [email protected] or call (843) 842-1402.
The Sea Pines Resort’s Parent Child School, led by Golf Digest and GOLF Magazine top instructor Tim Cooke, is a unique instructional program for one junior age 9-17 and one adult. The school runs Mon. – Wed. from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. and is $1,850 for parent and child. For more information, contact the Golf Learning Center.
Home to three championship layouts, famed Harbour Town Golf Links, Heron Point by Pete Dye and Atlantic Dunes by Davis Love III, the resort also offers 50% regular golf rates for juniors, and all three courses have family-friendly forward tees ranging from 3,677 to just over 5,000 yards.
PORT ROYAL GOLF AND RACQUET CLUB FAMILY GOLF RATES, GOLF AND TENNIS CAMPS
Part of the Heritage Golf Collection on Hilton Head Island, Port Royal Golf and Racquet Club is offering a wide variety of junior golf activities this summer.
From May 1-28, families can play nine holes after 5 p.m., and from May 29-Aug. 31 after 4 p.m., for an adult rate of $30 and $15 for juniors, including cart. Junior rental clubs are complimentary, and families are welcome to play from the junior tees on the Barony or Robber’s Row courses.
Offering a mix of short and long game exposure, families can also enjoy the “Planter’s Loop” consisting of three holes (a par 3, 4, and 5) and the newly renovated short game area. The junior rate is $10 and club rental is free, and the adult rate is $20 and rental clubs are $10. Families of four are discounted to $45. Port Royal’s three-hour Golf and Tennis Camp is offered from June 1–Aug. 13 from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. Mon.-Thurs. It includes fundamentals and drills for both sports, lunch and a 30-minute Footgolf session to cap off the morning. Rates are $75 daily and $199 weekly.
A beginner and intermediate junior golf clinic for kids ages 8-15 is also offered Mon.-Thurs. from 10-11 a.m. at the practice range and short game area. For more information on camps and clinics call (843) 681-1766.
PALMETTO DUNES TOPTRACER RANGE
Advanced juniors who play competitively, and those just getting started in the game, will love the new Toptracer Range at Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort, located at the resort’s Robert Trent Jones practice facility and learning center.
Palmetto Dunes Resort is the first resort in the Southeastern U.S. to introduce Toptracer Technology, creating a high-tech golf driving range for guests to compete against friends, play virtual courses and receive instant shot feedback. This leading-edge technology, used during PGA TOUR broadcasts, uses high speed cameras and sophisticated computer algorithms to provide instantaneous ball tracking information.
The Toptracer Range features 15 covered, outdoor bays with high-speed cameras, TV monitors, technology and games. Casual seating, drinks and food service are available during specific times of day. Of the seven different experience options, kids love the “Go Fish” game in which they must catch 24 different (virtual) sea creatures.
